The 5 Levels of Evangelism

True Apostolic ministry doesn't say “Come sit at my feet and let me be your Father.”...it says Go. Apostolic ministries don't gather...they spread. When you gather, you build an empire. When you spread, you build the Kingdom of God.

- Curry Blake

Before you head out, take a second to figure out where you are starting from.

Use the following statements to do a brief assessment on how you relate to evangelism.

Next to each statement, write down the number that best describes your response. Use the following scale:

5 = Always true

4 = Often true

3 = Sometimes true

2 = Not often true

1 = Never true

___ 1. I take time regularly to study the word of God and apply it in my life.

___ 2. I look for opportunities to get into spiritual conversations with people.

___ 3. I am relevant to culture and speak in a way that others can actually hear me, rather than just reciting off bible verses or burying them with words until they walk away.

___ 4. I share my faith because I love people not because I am scared God is going to punish me if I don’t.

___ 5. I am passionate about seeing people come to know Jesus in a real way, not just to getting them into my church.

___ 15. I can adapt to any situation and am ready to intellectually defend my faith when challenged.

___ 16. I don’t allow fear to stop me from sharing.

___ 17. People would recognize me as being a Christian and maybe even classify me as being a Jesus fanatic, but they wouldn’t consider me as being creepy, hateful, or unintelligent.

Understanding Your Evangelist Level

Level One Evangelist (scored mostly ones and twos):

Your skill as an evangelist is just beginning. You’re either a new believer, haven’t been trained properly, or just haven’t caught the passion or vision of what it really means to have the God of the universe living on the inside of you.

Most likely your vision of yourself as a Christian is one of being a person who simply goes to church.

Maybe you were raised in a Christian family and never really got hooked onto your faith and so just go through the motions because that’s how you were raised.

It’s unlikely that you don’t care at all otherwise you wouldn’t be reading a book like this.

You happen to be in a good place right now because that means you are the most vulnerable in your faith. You likely don’t have a lot of religious indoctrination clouding your mind, and thus you are able to learn fresh and start off on the right path.

The key for you is to get discipled by someone who is creating results. Check out our blog on "list of resources" for people to learn under.

Level Two Evangelist (scored mostly twos and threes):

You have likely started your evangelism journey but have had a lot of struggles and challenges along the way.

These might have slowed you down in some ways because it has made evangelism intimidating.

You’ve been rejected once before and you’re timid to get rejected again.

It’s also likely that you might not fully know who you are in Christ. To you, being a Christian is a cultural thing or just the right thing to do, and you’re probably not yet convinced of the power that lays within you.

Or you could be passionate about Jesus but just view yourself as an average person that God loves but not necessarily someone He wants to or can use in powerful ways.

It’s likely that you haven’t been properly discipled either but you are open to it. The fact that you are reading this book is evidence that you’d like to grow in this area.

Level Three Evangelist (scored mostly threes):

You are someone who is interested in growing and either have good people skills or are strong in your faith, but you might not be strong in both areas at the same time.

You study lots and love to learn but applying it sometimes intimidates you. For example you’re willing to talk to people but maybe not about God.

Or you spend a lot of time with God but are intimidated to talk to new people in general.

You see yourself as a good Christian and are willing to become more dangerous for the kingdom of God. You enjoy sitting in church and learning more about your faith.

Sometimes you use this as an excuse for not going out on the streets but you are more than willing to pray for people from church or your home.

Level Four Evangelist (scored mostly fours):

You caught the fire and there is no turning back.

You are interested in growing, up for challenges, and you are willing to bleed a little for Jesus.

Discipleship is important to you and you likely have teachers you search out for advice.

Your people skills are developing and most people would say they enjoy your presence.

Those who avoid you are the ones that disagree with you strongly, but most are open to hearing what you have to say.

You don’t necessarily like confrontation so when someone strongly disagrees with you, you are more likely to stay quiet and polite then confront them or debate.

You are likely someone who has found their identity in Jesus and evangelism is less about talking to people about your religion and more about talking to people about how Jesus has personally changed your life.

You are motivated by love for God and people, you try hard, and you want to make God proud. It’s likely that Evangelism is an area of strength for you and one of the gifts God has put in you.

Level Five Evangelist (scored mostly fives):

You had a “God Encounter” that you may or may not be able to explain.

This was a point in your life where you had a vision, experience, or some other sort of contact with God that changed you in a way that no other experience, teaching, or meditation could.

This was not just a “good feeling.” You could consider this your “Damascus Road” experience as Paul had.

Now when you walk the streets every person you see is someone that can be won for Christ. Every conversation you have you are thinking about how you can bless the other person in some way.

You want to be relevant and courteous to people, being sensitive to where they might be spiritually, but you are also not afraid to tell them the truth even if it hurts or is offensive to them.

You understand that if someone rejects you they are first rejecting Jesus.

You are not swayed by other philosophies and you are not scared to defend your faith even in the face of loss. And if you are scared, you feel you have God’s power to move forwards anyways.

You are likely someone that initiates groups or events for evangelism. Your aim is to evangelize the world and you know that discipling others is the way to do this.

Walking in the miraculous is not something strange to you.

In fact you expect it when sharing of Jesus. Whether you are confident or not, people skilled or not, specially trained or not; evangelism is something you are passionate about and feel you must do.

What Next

If you are discouraged by your level, don't be. Improving your level takes only one thing: desire.

People will often ask John Maxwell, legendary leadership coach, “How do you motivate people?” He always responds, “You can’t motivate people.

You can only find motivated people.” Your level as an evangelist is not determined by the results you get. It is determined by the desire in your heart.

If you want to improve your evangelism skill, it is only going to come by your desire to do so.

There are no books, videos, or teachings out there that are going to get you to the next level. The books and videos are simply there to equip you as you rise up to meet the challenges of evangelism.

It’s like the ever evolving fighter. He’s got a fight within but as he starts he might not necessarily know how to fight. In his heart he is a fighter. As he takes various courses and trains with various teachers he learns various techniques he can use in the ring.

All the techniques he learns however are useless if he doesn’t actually have a fight within him first. He will either be a well-trained loser or a well-trained spectator at best.

The same is said with evangelism. You either have it in your heart or you don’t. If you feel that you might not have the fight in your heart, relax. You do. If that were true you wouldn’t be reading this blog.

An evangelist and friend of mine, Casey Johnson, was passionate about praying for the sick and evangelizing. There was something deep in his heart that he knew he was supposed to do but he didn’t really know how.

Just like the untrained fighter he would go out on the streets and pray for people but he wouldn’t see the phenomenal results he knew were potential within him.

For months he did this and searched the internet looking for what he felt was missing until he came across Pete Cabrera Jr.

After watching some of Pete’s videos he knew he found what he was looking for. He would watch countless videos of Pete walking the street and healing the people he approached.

Then he would see Pete’s students doing the same thing beside him. Casey enrolled into Pete’s School of Identity and his results went through the roof.

Just like the fighter that got some training, he was always a level five evangelist. But now he was able to get the results of one.

I had the privilege of working with him both in Canada and America. Currently he is working in a “Christianity restricted” area of the world.

Evangelism is not just about walking the streets with a bible and telling people they need Jesus.

This is no more effective than the man wearing a cardboard sign and standing on the corner saying “The End is near.”

People these days don’t take that seriously anymore and it makes the Christian look spooky, irrelevant, and foolish.

Evangelism takes wisdom, relationship, and skill and if you can learn the principles you'll find with Faith Pro Hero, and you seek out the resources I share with you throughout these blogs, then you will indeed become a heavenly force to be reckoned with.

It’s time we start doing things right. You are the evangelist.
